The Al-Serkal Mosque wasn’t always this impressive. A gift from the Al Serkal Family of the United Arab Emirates the original mosque opened in 1968. It stood near the Boeung Kak lake now dry. But time marched on.
In 2014 a brand new mosque replaced the old one. This new building opened in March 2015. It was a grand event attended by Prime Minister Hun Sen and over a thousand people. Eisa Bin Nasser Bin Abdullatif Alserkal the Emirati businessman who funded the $2.9 million project was also there.
The Al-Serkal Mosque is a stunning example of Ottoman-style architecture. Rose and turquoise tiles line the walls. These beautiful ceramics were specially commissioned from Algerian artisans. The mosque’s construction was a huge achievement for Cambodia’s roughly 350000 Muslims. That is about 2 percent of the population. Most are ethnic Cham. They suffered terribly under the Khmer Rouge. Religious freedom was very limited for them in the 1980s. The Al-Serkal Mosque became a symbol of hope and renewal.
But the Al-Serkal Mosque’s story isn’t without controversy. A planned road was to cut through its grounds. This caused friction within the Muslim community. Some welcomed the road for its potential benefits. Others fought to protect the mosque’s tranquility. The issue sparked protests and political involvement. The road project however seems to be stalled.
Today the Al-Serkal Mosque remains a beloved center for Phnom Penh’s Muslim community. It stands as a reminder of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Cambodia.
