It’s a vessel of history, a silent storyteller in the heart of Phnom Penh. Legend has it that the Saravon Decho Pagoda was first built in 1422, nestled within a flooded forest called Boeung Reang. Its purpose? To safeguard four bronze Buddha statues discovered by a wealthy widow named Daun Penh. These were no ordinary statues. They were believed to have been unearthed from a mystical grotto on Wat Phnom hill. Daun Penh, a woman of great piety, felt a responsibility to enshrine these treasures. She also incorporated a sacred relic into the pagoda: a stone, inexplicably lodged in a tree trunk that drifted down the Mekong River. This stone, known as Neak Ta Preah Cau, is described as a deity, holding a baton and a conch, hair styled in an elegant chignon. This fusion of faith, generosity, and perhaps, destiny, led to the Saravon Decho Pagoda becoming a beacon of Buddhism in Phnom Penh.
