Prime Minister Hun Sen named Techo International Airport in December 2021. The name “Techo” honors historical military commanders. Techo Meas and Techo York were prominent in the Kandal Province.
The airport is located in the Kandal Province. It sits about 30 to 40 kilometers south of Phnom Penh. This location places it strategically for regional and international access. Techo International Airport covers a vast 2,600 hectares. This makes it the ninth largest airport in the world upon completion. The sheer scale is impressive. It is larger than many urban areas.
The vision for Techo International Airport is ambitious. It is designed as a 4F-level airport. This is the highest level. It can accommodate the largest aircraft.
The terminal will feature 22 gates. It can handle 40 mid-size aircraft. The design includes a central head house and aerofoil wings. These offer stunning views of the 189-hectare apron. The layout minimizes walking distances.
Inside, natural light floods the space. Lush greenery creates a welcoming environment. The design incorporates Cambodian traditions with a modern style. The roof canopy is a lightweight steel grid. It is supported by 36-meter span structural trees. An innovative screen modulates daylight. It enhances the terminal’s interior.
Techo International Airport is being developed in phases. The first phase can handle 13 to 15 million passengers per year. It can also handle 175,000 tonnes of cargo. Future phases will increase capacity to 50 million passengers by 2050.
Sustainability is a key focus. The airport will feature a photovoltaic farm. This will meet most of the energy requirements.
The airport will replace the existing Phnom Penh International Airport for commercial flights. The old airport will still be used for domestic flights and military purposes. A new road will connect Techo International Airport to Phnom Penh. This includes an 11.7km road and two concrete bridges. The airport will also be connected to the capital by a motorway and an elevated rail line.
