What if I told you that this very church, Tenth Presbyterian Church, was once home to the tallest structure in all of Philadelphia? That’s right, before the iconic City Hall pierced the sky, this house of worship held that honor. Tenth Presbyterian Church has graced this spot at 17th & Spruce Streets since 1893, but its roots reach back even further. The story begins in 1829 with the original Tenth Presbyterian Church on 12th & Walnut Streets. As the city blossomed and demographics shifted, a daughter church, West Spruce Street Presbyterian, was established right here in 1856. Architect John McArthur Jr., a member of the congregation and the mastermind behind Philadelphia City Hall, designed this very building. Imagine the buzz as its 250-foot spire, a marvel of the time, reached completion. Sadly, time took its toll on the spire and it was removed in 1912. In a twist of fate, the original Tenth Presbyterian Church saw a decline in membership. By 1893, the two congregations decided to merge, uniting at this location and adopting the name Tenth Presbyterian Church. Through the years, Tenth Presbyterian Church has been a steadfast presence, witnessing Philadelphia’s evolution while remaining a pillar of faith and community.
