This brownstone beauty, nestled in the heart of Philadelphia, has a history as captivating as its Romanesque Revival architecture. Saint Clement’s Church wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. Its cornerstone was laid in 1856 by Bishop Alonzo Potter. The land was a gift from William Wood, who saw the church not as a place of worship, but as a boost to his real estate ventures. Architect John Notman, known for his work on St. Mark’s and Holy Trinity, designed Saint Clement’s Church. Construction took three long years, plagued by financial woes. Work even stopped at one point, leaving the building exposed to the elements, roofless, for an extended period. Imagine Saint Clement’s Church, skeletal and incomplete, a testament to financial hardship. Yet, it persevered. In 1859, Saint Clement’s Church finally opened its doors, a symbol of resilience. The church’s story doesn’t end there. It was consecrated in 1864, a moment of triumph. The original spire, soaring over 200 feet, proved too heavy for the foundation and had to be removed in 1869. Years later, in 1929, the entire 5,000-ton structure of Saint Clement’s Church was miraculously moved 40 feet west to accommodate the widening of 20th Street. Inside, the church holds even more fascinating stories. The magnificent reredos and triptych above the high altar weren’t installed until 1908. The Lady Chapel, with its English red stone altar, offers a quiet sanctuary. The Shrine of Our Lady of Clemency, a towering 25-foot tribute, commands attention.
