Tucked away in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson University East Falls Campus has a fascinating story to tell. It’s a story of textiles, innovation, and a merger that created a powerhouse of learning. Thomas Jefferson University East Falls Campus began its life as the Philadelphia Textile School in 1884. Local manufacturers, realizing their industry was lagging, sought to create a place to train future textile leaders. The school’s first classes, taught by Theodore C. Search, were held at 1336 Spring Garden Street with a mere five students. The school bounced around a few locations before landing at its current location in East Falls in 1949, after severing its ties with the Philadelphia Museum and School of Industrial Art. The Philadelphia Textile School became the Philadelphia Textile Institute in 1942, gaining the ability to award bachelor’s degrees. It continued to evolve, becoming the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science in 1961 and finally, Philadelphia University in 1999, reflecting its expanding academic offerings. The campus grew over the years, adding buildings, labs, and even a library named after Paul J. Gutman. Thomas Jefferson University, originally Jefferson Medical College (founded in 1824), has its own rich history, starting as the Medical Department of Jefferson College in Canonsburg, PA. The first class graduated in 1826, and over the years, the medical college became a respected institution. In 2017, these two institutions, Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University, merged, creating the institution we know today as Thomas Jefferson University, with the East Falls Campus serving as a vibrant hub for learning. The campus now boasts over 50 buildings, including the Kanbar Campus Center and the Gallagher Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center. From its humble beginnings as a textile school to its current status as a key part of a major university, Thomas Jefferson University East Falls Campus stands as a testament to the power of adaptation and innovation.
