On Christmas Day 1723, a pivotal moment unfolded by the chilly Wissahickon Creek. This marked the birth of the Germantown Church of the Brethren. Imagine the scene: A group of German-speaking Brethren, led by Peter Becker, partaking in full-immersion baptisms. They sought a new spiritual home in William Penn’s tolerant colony. This act established the first Brethren congregation in America. The Germantown Church of the Brethren began its ministry at 6611 Germantown Avenue. This was a prosperous rural village, now part of Philadelphia. The Germantown Church of the Brethren’s beliefs centered on pacifism, peace, a rejection of oaths and litigation, and an emphasis on simplicity, compassion, and outreach. They believed this was the truest path to emulating Jesus’ life. The original meetinghouse, built in 1770, reflects the community’s growth. This was the first Brethren meetinghouse in America. It was a simple, 30-foot-square stone structure with a loft and basement. The basement served as a space for love feast preparations, while the loft accommodated travelers from afar. The building has seen changes over time, including additions and renovations. In 1995, interpretive displays were installed. These displays showcase historical panels, a replica loft with love feast equipment, a spinning wheel, and interior display windows, offering glimpses into the past. The area behind the meetinghouse became a cemetery in 1793. This was prompted by a yellow fever epidemic that ravaged Philadelphia. Over a thousand souls rest there. Among them are prominent Brethren leaders like Alexander Mack Sr. and Jr., Peter Keyser, and Louis S. Bauman. The Germantown Church of the Brethren has witnessed the transformation of its surrounding community. From a German-speaking village to a predominantly African American neighborhood, the church has remained a constant. It has faced challenges, including a period of drug crisis in the 1980s. Yet, it persevered, thanks to the dedication of its leaders and the belief in its potential for revitalization. The Germantown Church of the Brethren stands as a testament to its enduring presence. Its ministry continues with about 50 to 60 active members. Its outreach programs, which were paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, are being revived. Its doors remain open. The Germantown Church of the Brethren continues to serve as a spiritual anchor, inviting all those seeking a warm and welcoming community of faith.
