Did you know that Decoding the Tree of Life is more than just a sculpture? It is a symbol of healing and scientific discovery. This magnificent artwork was created by the renowned artist Maya Lin. It resides in the Pavilion at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia.
Decoding the Tree of Life stands tall at 38 feet 8 inches. Its presence fills the atrium with a sense of wonder. Lin’s vision was to craft an ethereal and uplifting piece. She wanted to connect people to the natural world. She wanted to also highlight the cultural context of the Pavilion.
The sculpture’s design draws inspiration from three sources. These are a river, a tree, and DNA. Lin explores how science and medicine help us understand life’s foundations. She aimed to unlock the complex codes within Decoding the Tree of Life.
This two-story sculpture hangs from the Pavilion’s ceilings. It gracefully weaves between the ground floor and connector levels. Its placement invites viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of life.
The making of Decoding the Tree of Life was a meticulous process. It was made within UAP’s Rock Tavern foundry. Lin herself oversaw every step from mock-up to final form. The core structure consists of 22 cast stainless steel branches. These branches were carefully welded together. Over 15,500 handblown glass bulbs adorn the trunk and branches. These glass spheres add a magical lightness to the artwork.
Decoding the Tree of Life was commissioned by the University of Pennsylvania Health System. It is a permanent installation, designed for this specific site. The artwork aims to create a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere. It wants to instill a sense of peace in patients and visitors.
