Why is this church facing away from the Arequipa Cathedral? We’re standing before the Iglesia del Solar, a seemingly modest chapel tucked away in the heart of Arequipa. Its placement is unique. Unlike other religious buildings in the historical center, the Iglesia del Solar’s facade faces away from the Basilica Cathedral. Local legend claims this is because the Virgin housed within needs to “observe” the Chili River. This placement allows her to keep watch over the river and protect the barrio from its frequent floods. The Iglesia del Solar, also known as the Capilla de San Pedro del Barrio del Solar, holds a special place in the community. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s the heart of the Barrio del Solar, a neighborhood steeped in tradition. Originally home to tanners and leather workers, the barrio has preserved unique customs, particularly surrounding the veneration of the Virgen del Rosario. Known locally as the “Virgen del Solar,” her image graces the main altar. The Iglesia del Solar itself has a fascinating history. Built in 1870, it’s said that the chapel was constructed from sillar leftover from the building of the Bolognesi Bridge. Its neoclassical style earned it recognition as a national cultural heritage site in 1991. Look closely at the facade. You’ll see a double-headed eagle. Between its necks is a crown, and on its chest, a heart with the monogram of the Virgin Mary. The eagle’s claws clutch the year 1870, likely commemorating the chapel’s reconstruction after the devastating earthquake of 1868. Inside, you’ll find the primary devotions of this barrio: the Child, the Virgin Mary, San José, and Santiago. While the Virgen del Rosario holds a prominent place, it’s worth noting that the chapel was previously known as the Capilla de la Virgen del Rosario. The Barrio del Solar itself is an intriguing place. Its narrow, winding streets create a small citadel within the city. Many original families have migrated, but they often return for the annual celebration of the Virgen del Rosario at the end of November. The Iglesia del Solar stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this unique community.
