For years, it thrived as an Apostolisch Vicariaat. This transition marked a significant milestone. It signified the growth and autonomy of the Catholic community in Suriname. The first bishop, Monseigneur Stephanus Kuijpers, led the newly established bisdom for 12 years. He laid the groundwork for its future. Bishops Aloysius Zichem and Wilhelmus de Bekker followed, each leaving their indelible mark. In 2015, Monseigneur Karel Choennie assumed leadership. He continues to guide the church. In 2023, the Rooms Katholieke Bisdom celebrated its 65th anniversary. President Chandrikapersad Santokhi himself attended the commemorative service at the Sint Petrus en Paulus Basiliek.
