Established on November 1 1968 the Anton de Kom University ADEK stands proudly before you. This is more than just a university. It’s a testament to Suriname’s rich history and unwavering pursuit of knowledge.
The ADEK wasn’t built overnight. Tertiary education in Suriname had humble beginnings. The Geneeskundige School offered higher learning in the 19th century. A law school also existed. Other specialized programs trained surveyors dentists and pharmacists. But a true university was a dream.
That dream became reality in 1966. The Staten of Suriname a governing body decided to work with the government. They aimed to establish a university. The official founding took place on November 1 1968. The historic Theatre Star hosted the momentous proclamation. Since then every November 1st is celebrated as Founders’ Day.
The first faculty to open its doors was the Faculty of Law. Other faculties followed. The Faculty of Medical Sciences opened in 1969. The Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences joined in 1975. The Faculties of Technological Sciences and Natural Sciences also found their place.
The university faced challenges. It was even closed for a period between December 1982 and October 1983. Then a significant renaming occurred. The university was renamed in honor of Anton de Kom. He was an anti-colonial activist tragically killed by the Nazis. His name now embodies the university’s commitment to justice and freedom.
Today ADEK stands as Suriname’s sole university. It offers a wide range of programs. These include medical sciences social sciences technological sciences humanities and mathematical and physical sciences. Numerous research institutes support its academic mission.
