Sant’Agata also known as Agatha of Sicily was born around 231 AD. Sources say she was born in either Catania or Palermo. She came from a rich and noble family. From a young age Agatha dedicated her life to God. She chose to remain celibate. She devoted herself wholly to Jesus and the Church.

However, her beauty attracted unwanted attention. Quintianus desired Agatha. Because of his high diplomatic ranking he thought he could force her to marry him. He wanted her to turn away from her vow. Agatha spurned his proposals. Quintianus knew Agatha was a Christian. This was during the persecution of Decius. He had her arrested. She was brought before the judge who was Quintianus himself.

He expected her to give in when faced with torture and death. Agatha simply reaffirmed her belief in God. She prayed for courage and strength.

Quintianus imprisoned her in a brothel. He hoped to break her spirit. Agatha never lost her confidence in God. She suffered a month of assaults. She resisted efforts to make her abandon her vow. Quintianus heard of her calm strength. He ordered her to be brought before him again. During her interrogation she said being a servant of Jesus Christ was her true freedom.

Enraged Quintianus sent her back to prison. Agatha continued to proclaim Jesus as her Savior. Quintianus ordered her to be tortured. She was stretched on a rack. She was torn with iron hooks. She was burned with torches and whipped. He then commanded her breasts be cut off.

After this torture, she was sent back to prison. She received no food or medical attention. But the Lord gave her all the care she needed. St. Peter appeared to her in a vision. He comforted her and healed her wounds through his prayers.

After four days Quintianus ignored the miraculous cure. He had her stripped naked. She was rolled over hot coals mixed with sharp shards. When returned to prison Agatha prayed. She asked the Lord to receive her soul. Agatha is believed to have died around the year 251.

She is commonly featured in religious art. She is often shown with shears tongs or breasts on a plate.

Agatha is the patron saint of Sicily. She is the patron of bellfounders and breast cancer patients. She is also the patron of Palermo rape victims and wet nurses. She is considered a powerful intercessor against fire. Her feast day is celebrated on February 5th.
