A hidden gem awaits you. This is the Chiesa della Madonna di Monte Oliveto also known as the Badia Nuova. Nestled near Palermo Cathedral its history spans centuries. Originally the site housed the Archbishop’s palace. Its roots reach back to 444. Imagine the countless lives that have touched these very stones.

In 1460 the Archbishop’s court moved. The old palace became a monastery dedicated to Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto. The transition wasn’t smooth. In 1520 the nuns briefly abandoned the Rule of St Clare. They adopted the Rule of Monte Oliveto. They soon returned to their original order.

Then came Mariano Smiriglio. This talented architect designed the church we see today. Construction lasted from 1620 to 1623. His design harmoniously blends with the nearby Arab-Norman apses of the cathedral. Notice the stunning facade. It dates from 1628. The intricate details are breathtaking. Two grey marble columns support an arched and broken tympanum. A crowned coat of arms rests above. It displays the Franciscan emblem two arms embracing a cross. One is bare the other clothed a symbol of conformity to Christ’s teachings.

The interior is equally impressive. A single nave houses two altars. Each altar holds valuable artwork. The altarpieces are magnificent. They boast agate paliotto. Marvel at the stuccoes by Giacomo Serpotta and his brother Giuseppe. They adorn the under-choir ceiling. Filippo Tancredi’s frescoes depict scenes from the Virgin Mary’s life. The paintings are captivating. Pietro Novelli’s Ascension of Christ dominates the nave’s vault.

The high altar is a masterpiece. It dates from 1818. Intricate stonework and bronze figures inspire awe. The central theme is the Immaculate Lamb. Scenes from the Old Testament adorn it. Niccolò Puglia created this beautiful work of art.

The sacristy boasts more treasures. Frescoes by Filippo Tancredi adorn the walls. They depict the Coronation of Mary and other scenes. The altar is lavish. It showcases twisting columns and cherubs. This sacristy was once known as the Cappella delle sorelle Spatafora.

The Chiesa della Madonna di Monte Oliveto’s story is one of layers. It mirrors the rich tapestry of Palermo itself. Each stone whispers tales of faith devotion and artistic brilliance. Take a moment to appreciate this hidden gem. Its beauty and history are truly unforgettable.
