Fifty-seven days. That’s the chilling gap that separates us from another tragedy, the Capaci bombing. Fifty-seven days between the loss of Giovanni Falcone and the devastation we stand before at the Strage di via D’Amelio. Here, on July 19, 1992, at 4:58 PM, Paolo Borsellino, a relentless force against the Mafia, met his end. A Fiat 126, packed with 100 kilograms of TNT, ripped through Via D’Amelio. The Strage di via D’Amelio claimed not only Borsellino’s life, but also five members of his escort: Agostino Catalano, Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina, and Claudio Traina. Emanuela Loi, tragically, became the first Italian female police escort to die in the line of duty. Imagine the scene: the judge arriving to visit his mother, the parked cars lining the street, an ordinary Sunday afternoon shattered in an instant. The bomb’s impact was horrific. The explosion claimed lives and left a scar on this city. Adding to the tragedy, Borsellino’s red notebook, his “agenda rossa,” vanished from the scene. This notebook, filled with crucial details of his investigations, was never recovered. The Strage di via D’Amelio, much like the Capaci bombing before it, sent shockwaves throughout Italy. Protests erupted, officials resigned, and thousands of soldiers were deployed to Sicily. This attack underscores the brutal reality of the Mafia’s power and the courage of those who dared to challenge it. Paolo Borsellino, standing here in Via D’Amelio, paid the ultimate price for his unwavering dedication to justice.
