A crumbling testament to time, the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria stands before us. It whispers tales of devotion and destruction. The Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria began its life in the 14th century. Its very stones speak of this era. The style of the carvings confirms its origins. However, the first written record we have of the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria dates to 1567. It mentions the Confraternita del Santissimo Crocifisso. The confraternity was listed among those enrolled in the Opera Pia di Navarro. Imagine Palermo in 1570. A notary meticulously records the boundaries of the church courtyard. A few decades later, in 1590, Valerio Rosso described the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria. He noted it as “modernly renovated”. The church continued to serve the community. The painter Giuseppe d’Alvino, known as il Sozzo, was buried there in 1611. In 1616, a pivotal moment occurred. Cardinal Giannettino Doria granted the church to the Trinitarian Order. This marked the beginning of the Trinitarian convent associated with the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria. The convent, however, never flourished. It struggled to maintain a sufficient number of monks. Control of the church often reverted back to the confraternity. The church’s interior housed five chapels. The Cappella di San Giuseppe, the Cappella della Madonna dei Rimedi, and the Cappella della Santissima Trinità were on one side. The Cappella della Madonna della Grazia and the Cappella della Santissima Vergine con San Rocco e San Sebastiano graced the other. An impressive cappellone absidale encompassed the presbytery. High above the altar, the venerated image of the Santissimo Crocifisso held the gaze of worshippers. Statues of San Giovanni de Matha and San Felice di Valois flanked the crucifix. The story takes a dramatic turn in 1958. A wall of the neighboring San Francesco Saverio convent collapsed. It tragically destroyed the facade and part of the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria’s nave. Today, the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria stands in ruins. It’s a poignant reminder of Palermo’s rich and complex history.
