In 1929, a new chapter began for Grace Church Cowley. The original Congregational church on Temple Road had become too small. A new building, the one you see before you, arose. Grace Church Cowley served a community largely made up of Morris Motors employees who had moved to Oxford for work. The church transitioned to become a United Reformed Church in 1972 when the Congregational and Presbyterian churches united. Unfortunately, the congregation dwindled over the following decades. By November 2017, Grace Church Cowley closed its doors. But the story doesn’t end there. In 2018, the Littlegate Trust purchased the building. They offered it to St Ebbe’s Church with the vision of reviving Christian worship in Cowley. A new congregation, drawn from St Ebbe’s congregations in the city center and Headington, formed Grace Church Cowley in September 2019. Approximately 60 adults and 20 children embarked on this new journey. Grace Church Cowley was reborn. Today, Grace Church Cowley continues its mission as a Church of England church, operating under a Bishop’s Mission Order within the Parish of Cowley. If you visit on a Wednesday evening, you might encounter their Missional Communities. These small groups gather in homes to study the Bible, pray, and offer mutual support. They also enjoy social events, extending a warm welcome to newcomers interested in experiencing the church community.
