King George VI himself opened these very doors. Welcome to the Weston Library a magnificent building in the heart of Oxford.

This isn’t just any library. It’s the main research library of Oxford University part of the prestigious Bodleian Library system. The Weston Library stands proudly on the corner of Broad Street and Parks Road.

Originally known as the New Bodleian Library it opened in 1940. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott the architect behind those iconic red telephone boxes designed this structure. He faced a challenge. He had to store millions of books without building too high. His solution an innovative design that extends deep underground. This clever design created an 11-storey bookstack a remarkable feat of engineering. Three levels are below ground.

The Rockefeller Foundation generously contributed 60% of the one million pound cost. Bladon stone and Clipsham dressings form the library’s beautiful exterior. The building is connected underground to the Radcliffe Camera another Oxford landmark. You can still walk between them today.

Time passed. The library needed a major update. Extensive renovations transformed the building. It reopened in 2015 as the Weston Library named in honor of the Garfield Weston Foundation’s substantial contribution. WilkinsonEyre Architects led the transformation. They skillfully combined modern amenities with the building’s historical charm.

Today the Weston Library welcomes all. Blackwell Hall the main entrance is a vibrant public space. It hosts exhibitions events and lectures. The Treasures Gallery showcases rare and precious items. Medieval manuscripts ancient texts and important documents are on display.

The library holds incredible collections. There are medieval and renaissance manuscripts. Early printed books including a Gutenberg Bible. Modern manuscripts and archives. The archives of JRR Tolkien and TE Lawrence are here. Maps and ephemera provide insights into history and culture. Researchers can access these special collections but the public can explore the exhibitions and public areas freely.

The Independent newspaper called the Weston Library a hey presto moment for the city. This transformation deserves that praise. The Weston Library is not merely a library it’s a dynamic cultural and educational center. It’s a treasure trove of knowledge and history a place where past meets present. A true Oxford gem.
