“Imagine Cowley in 1935” a hushed voice begins. “Oxfordshire County Council establishes a small office in County Hall. Its mission To collect Oxfordshire’s history.” This is the Oxfordshire History Centre’s humble start. Not in this grand building you see before you but in a much smaller space.
This impressive building the Oxfordshire History Centre is more than just a repository of documents. It’s a living testament to Oxfordshire’s rich past. Housed within the former St Luke’s Church this building holds centuries of history within its walls. Originally built by Lord Nuffield for his Cowley factory workers it found a new purpose in 2000. The transformation was remarkable.
The Oxfordshire History Centre didn’t just appear overnight. It’s the culmination of decades of dedicated work. The Oxfordshire County Council’s initial office expanded dramatically in 1984. The Bodleian Library transferred its diocesan archdeaconry and parish collections significantly boosting the archive’s holdings. Think of the sheer volume of documents suddenly entrusted to their care. A monumental undertaking.
The growing collection outgrew County Hall’s space. Remote storage facilities were added but more space was needed. The Diocese of Oxford offered a solution St Luke’s Church a generous gift. The bells of St Luke’s however were not forgotten. They now ring in a church in Hampstead. Quite a journey.
The conversion required significant funding and effort. The Heritage Lottery Fund Paul Getty and other donors generously contributed. The Oxfordshire History Centre opened to the public in November 2000. Its collection is truly impressive. Administrative records for the county are here. Oxford City Archives too find a home within these walls. Church records spanning centuries are available for research.
