Did you notice the simple yet dignified cross? This is the Wytham War Memorial. It stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by the men of Wytham. They gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
The Wytham War Memorial is located roadside. It is adjacent to The White Hart pub. The memorial’s presence is a constant reminder of the village’s history.
Take a closer look at the Wytham War Memorial. You will see that it is constructed from a white coloured stone. The memorial features a four-stepped square base. A square sectioned plinth sits atop this base. The plinth supports a square sectioned shaft. The shaft tapers at the top. This tapering forms an integral decorative cross.
The inscriptions are incised on the side faces of the plinth. There is also an inscription on the front face of the top step of the Wytham War Memorial. The inscriptions are filled with black enamel paint. This makes them stand out. A small brass plaque is located on the second step from the top. It commemorates the memorial’s restoration in early 1995.
The Wytham War Memorial was unveiled in October 1919. The rededication ceremony took place on May 8th, 1995. Rev’d. Roger Beckwith D.D. and parishioners attended.
The inscription on the 6 o’clock plinth face reads. It states “To the Glory of God and in grateful and affectionate memory of the men from Wytham who laid down their lives in the Great War 1914-1918”. The 3 and 9 o’clock plinth faces list eight names. The 12 o’clock plinth face lists one name.
The inscription on the top step face reads. It states “Their bodies are buried in peace but their name liveth for evermore”. The plaque inscription commemorates the 50th Anniversary of V.E. Day. It reads “This memorial was restored by the parishioners of Wytham and dedicated by the Rev. Roger Beckwith D.D. to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of V.E. Day May 8th 1995”.
The Wytham War Memorial commemorates those who died in World War I and World War II. Eight names are listed for the First World War. One name is listed for the Second World War. The names include William Buckland and Herbert Bustin. Other names are George Gates and Albert Podbery. Albert Savings and Stanley Savings are also listed. William T. Stanley and Philip Wright are remembered. Herbert K. Neale is also commemorated.
The Wytham War Memorial stands approximately 10 feet tall. It is 7 feet 6 inches wide. The cross and plaque are key components.
In 1993, the inscriptions were worn. The Wytham War Memorial was restored in 1995 by the parishioners of Wytham.
