Deep in the heart of Oxford, nestled among centuries-old buildings, lies Exeter College. A hush falls over our group as we stand before its imposing gates. Exeter College has stood here for over 700 years, a testament to time and tradition. Founded in 1314 by Bishop Walter Stapledon and his brother Sir Richard Stapledon, it was originally intended as a small institution to educate clergy. Imagine the brothers, devout and ambitious, envisioning a place where young minds could be nurtured in the pursuit of knowledge. The college, initially known as Stapledon Hall, started humbly on Turl Street with only twelve to fourteen students. The motto, “Floreat Exon,” meaning “Let Exeter Flourish,” became a guiding principle. Can you picture those early scholars, their robes billowing, debating theology within these very walls? In the 16th century, Exeter College experienced a transformation thanks to the generosity of Sir William Petre. His donations established the Petrean Fellowships and fueled further expansion. His son, John Petre, continued this legacy, securing Exeter’s place as a prominent college. Later, Sir John Acland’s contribution financed a new dining hall and established scholarships for poor students, a progressive move for the time. A clever bursar invited noble Roman Catholic students to take classes, boosting the college’s reputation and finances, although these students were not permitted to matriculate. Exeter College faced declining popularity in the 18th century, mirroring a trend across Oxford. However, university reforms in the 1850s revitalized the college and ushered in a new era of growth. For centuries, Exeter College remained a male-only institution. This changed in 1979 when the college opened its doors to female students. Today, Exeter College stands as a vibrant mix of old and new. The chapel, inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, reminds us of the college’s rich history. The modern Cohen Quad, a recent addition, symbolizes Exeter College’s continuous evolution. As we leave Exeter College, let the motto “Floreat Exon” resonate. May this historic institution continue to flourish, nurturing minds and shaping futures for centuries to come.
