What if these walls could talk? Gebaude SK in Osnabrueck might tell tales of treaties and transformations. This building stands as a testament to Osnabrueck’s rich history. Today it is part of the Hochschule Osnabrueck. But what stories do its stones hold?

Osnabrueck is more than just a city. It is a stage where European history unfolded. The town hall here played a pivotal role. From 1643 to 1648, envoys gathered within its walls. They sought to end the devastating Thirty Years War. Gebaude SK was not built back then but Osnabrueck has a long history.

Imagine the scene inside Osnabrueck’s town hall. Representatives from warring nations debated and negotiated. The treaties of the Peace of Westphalia emerged. This agreement reshaped the map of Europe. It ushered in a new era of diplomacy. The envoys representing the Kingdom of Sweden along with those representing the emperor and also the imperial estates met in Osnabruck. Those representing the emperor and France negotiated simultaneously at the town hall in Munster.

The Friedensaal or Hall of Peace commemorates these events. Portraits of 42 European envoys line the walls. They serve as silent witnesses to history. Three portraits of powerful rulers also grace the hall. Christina of Sweden, Louis XIV of France and German Emperor Ferdinand III oversaw the negotiations.

Osnabrueck faced destruction during World War II. Allied bombs severely damaged the town hall in 1944. Fire consumed it down to its foundation walls. Fortunately, many historic furnishings had been stored away. Restoration efforts began and in 1948 the town hall reopened.

The town hall showcases late Gothic architecture. Its exterior makes a striking impression. An 18-metre-high hipped roof dominates the frontal view. Six towers stand at the roof’s lower end. They evoke images of watchtowers and fortresses. Since 1846, a large flight of steps leads to the entrance. The door handle bears the year 1648 and a dove.

Above the entrance, a statue of Charlemagne watches over the city. He founded Osnabrueck and its Roman Catholic Diocese. Emperor sculptures flank him. Sigismund, Frederick II, Rudolf of Habsburg and Wilhelm I are depicted. Frederick Barbarossa, Arnulf of Carinthia, Maximilian I and Ludwig the Bavarian are also shown.

Inside the town hall treasury, precious items are displayed. Civic silver, coins and embossing stamps gleam. Documents of historical significance are preserved. A replica of the Osnabruck Instrument of Peace is showcased. A copy of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa’s grant of jurisdiction from 1171 is present.

Osnabrueck is easily accessible by train. The main train station is a short walk from cultural highlights. St Peter’s Cathedral is only 15 minutes away. So Gebaude SK is also easy to reach.

As you stand before Gebaude SK consider Osnabrueck’s place in history. This city helped to forge a new world order. While Gebaude SK may not have been present at those historic negotiations. But it is still part of this vibrant city.
