The weathered stones whisper tales of centuries. This is the Iglesia de San Martin de Socabaya. Its very foundation holds echoes of a vibrant past.

Originally. it was not San Martin. The Iglesia de San Martin de Socabaya you see before you is not the first church built here. A grander Iglesia de San Fernando once stood proudly. That church. however. was tragically destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1582. This impressive structure is a testament to the resilience of the people of Socabaya. It was built by Father and Historian Lic Juan Domingo Zamacola y Juregui. He oversaw its construction. The new church opened its doors on May 25 1795. This date is considered the birth of the district itself. The church wasn’t just a religious building. It was the heart of the community.

The name Socabaya itself is steeped in history. It originates from the Quechua words “Succa Aya” meaning “field of tombs”. Before the Inca. Socabaya served as a cemetery. This is evident in the many stone burial sites on the slopes of Cerro Pillu. The Spanish. slightly altering the pronunciation. gave us the Socabaya we know today.

The Iglesia de San Martin de Socabaya. though rebuilt. still carries the weight of history. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living record. It witnessed the arrival of the Spanish. It weathered countless storms. It stood as a silent guardian through the tumultuous Battle of Socabaya in 1836. This battle saw General Felipe Santiago Salaverry. defeated by Marshal Andres de Santa Cruz. Salaverry’s defeat led to the short-lived Peru-Bolivian Confederation.

The church also holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Socabaya. Each September. they celebrate the Virgin Mary under the title of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. This festival is a vibrant display of faith and tradition. It’s a joyous occasion. It reflects the deep-rooted culture and heritage of Socabaya. The celebration is not only religious but also a significant cultural and tourist event.

The Iglesia de San Martin de Socabaya is more than just a place of worship. It is a symbol of resilience. a chronicle of the past and a beacon for the future. As you stand here. you’re not just looking at a church. You’re experiencing a history stretching back centuries. A history woven into the very stones that surround you.
