“Blindfolded and bound, Christ sits.” Those words encapsulate the scene before us in Die Verspottung Painting.

Die Verspottung Christi translated means The Mocking of Christ. This early oil on wood painting was created between 1503 and 1505 by Matthias Grünewald. Today, it resides in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

In Die Verspottung Painting Christ is sitting on a low stone wall. His hands and arms are bound tightly with rope. A torturer stands before him. This torturer is pulling on the rope. His back turned to us hiding his evil face. Another stands behind Christ. He tugs on Christ’s hair. His fist is raised ready to strike.

On the right a man holds a staff. He uses his other hand to restrain a second torturer. The torturer doesn’t even seem to notice him.

An older man faces the man with the staff. He lays his hands upon the man’s shoulders. It appears they are conversing maybe plotting more evil. In the background we see three more men. On the left is a musician. He plays a flute with one hand. He beats a small drum with the other. Near the center is a youth and on the right stands an older man.

Grünewald masterfully captures the raw emotion of the scene. Look closely at the faces of the mockers. You can see their cruelty and hatred. Consider the isolation of Christ. Blindfolded bound and surrounded by tormentors. Grünewald doesn’t shy away from depicting the brutality. He forces us to confront the reality of Christ’s suffering in Die Verspottung Painting.

Die Verspottung Painting serves as a stark reminder. It shows the depths of human cruelty. It also shows the unwavering faith of Christ. Take a moment to reflect on the power of this image and the story it tells.
