Ever wondered where to find the heart of Arequipan craftsmanship? Right here at Fundo El Fierro, you can discover a treasure trove of artistry.

Fundo El Fierro is more than just a place. It is a vibrant hub where tradition meets creativity. Its story stretches back centuries. It has transformed over time.

Originally, Fundo El Fierro belonged to Presbítero Jorge Antonio del Fierro. In 1803, he sought royal permission to donate the property. He wanted to give it to the Colegio de las Educandas. King approved his request in 1804. In 1831, the donation was formalized.

However, Fundo El Fierro’s purpose shifted due to national circumstances. By 1891, it briefly housed the public jail. This was a temporary measure. They used it until the new men’s prison was built.

In the 1940s, the property was leased several times. Unusually, a car mechanic shop even operated here in the 60s and 70s. Later, the Junta de Rehabilitación y Desarrollo de Arequipa acquired the abandoned site in 1972.

Today, Fundo El Fierro thrives as a cultural center. It shares its space with the Museo Histórico Municipal “Guillermo Zegarra Meneses”. It is also home to the Asociación de Artesanos Productores Fundo El Fierro.

Step inside Fundo El Fierro. Discover a wide array of handcrafted goods. Admire textiles and embroideries. Notice the detailed leatherwork. See the unique ceramics. Don’t miss the silverwork and wrought iron pieces. Explore creations made from seeds, volcanic rock, and alpaca wool. Colorful rugs also adorn the displays.

For over 40 years, artisans have gathered here. They share their skills and heritage. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted their activities. But the tradition has thankfully been revived.

The Fundo El Fierro fair usually occurs in August. Artisans from Arequipa, Piura, Ayacucho, and Cusco participate. They also come from Madre de Dios, Puno, and Moquegua. Dates may vary each year.

Located near Plaza San Francisco on Puente Grau 213. Fundo El Fierro invites you to experience Arequipa’s artistic soul. It is the perfect place to find unique souvenirs. It is also a place to support local talent.
