Ten meters tall it stands a testament to the past. The Ehrenmal on Strasbourg Square in Osnabruck. A silent guardian of memories. It wasn’t always here though.

Originally built in 1880 on Neumarkt the Ehrenmal commemorates the soldiers of the Principality of Osnabruck who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Imagine the scene then. A vibrant Neumarkt a central urban space. The Ehrenmal towered proudly a symbol of victory. A bronze Germania statue crowned the column. It represented the newly achieved German unity. It served as a victory column celebrating triumph. It was also a memorial for the fallen.

But times change. By the 1920s the Ehrenmal stood in the way of progress. The growing traffic required its removal. So in 1928 the city carefully relocated this monument. It found a new home on Strasbourg Square in the Westerberg district. A fitting location given that Westerberg was a prestigious villa district. It was a place where Osnabruck celebrated its Prussian-German glory. After all Strasbourg itself had become German after the Franco-Prussian War. The streets surrounding the square bear the names of Prussian generals. Moltke Roon Blumenthal and others.

Sadly the original Germania statue didn’t survive the Second World War. It was melted down. But the spirit of remembrance endured. Students from the Ratsgymnasium Osnabruck created a new sculpture. It’s called Die schutzende Torsion. It symbolizes German-French friendship. A powerful message of peace replacing the earlier militaristic undertones.

Today the Ehrenmal remains a poignant reminder. It’s a reminder of the costs of war. It’s a tribute to those who sacrificed everything. It’s also a symbol of reconciliation and hope. Look closely. You’ll see the quiet strength of this monument. A silent witness to the passage of time. A powerful reminder of the past. The Ehrenmal on Strasbourg Square a monument that endures.
