Iglesia Santa María de la Acequia began over 200 years ago. A small green cross marked the center of a growing community. The people erected a small chapel with a stone altar. Here they celebrated Mass during important festivals.
As the population grew a larger temple became necessary. In the early 1900s the chapel was expanded. It then accommodated over 100 people.
Construction of the majestic Iglesia Santa María de la Acequia commenced in 1950. Locals organized bullfights and fairs to raise funds. Their collective efforts culminated in 1960. The Holy Cross was then enthroned upon a fine marble altar.
In 1965 the Archbishop of Arequipa gifted a silver chalice. It was gold-plated and of French origin. This chalice was for Mass celebrations.
By 1970 the Missionary Congregation of Saint Paul of Malta took charge. They resided in a house built for this purpose. On February 13 1972 Iglesia Santa María de la Acequia was declared a parish. It was dedicated to the Holy Cross. This granted rights to perform sacraments.
Initially Iglesia Santa María de la Acequia served several growing towns. These included Francisco Bolognesi and Rafael Belaunde. By 2004 these communities formed their own parish. Today Iglesia Santa María de la Acequia serves about 15000 residents. Its reach extends from Francisco Bolognesi to the Virgin of Chapi Charcani Sanctuary.
Look at the arches of the interior roof. Arequipan artist Rodolfo Pastor adorned them in 2003. They depict scenes from the history of Christ’s cross.
