“Did the coal whisper secrets to the pumps?” a curious visitor might have wondered at the ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht. This imposing structure, now a silent sentinel against the Osnabrück sky, once throbbed with the relentless rhythm of massive Woolf steam engines. The ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht, built around 1889, wasn’t about mining coal directly. It was about battling the relentless influx of groundwater that threatened the nearby Stüveschacht mine. Imagine two 650-horsepower behemoths, each capable of lifting 12 cubic meters of water per minute. This water, drawn from a depth of 210 meters, was the lifeblood of the Stüveschacht, enabling the miners to extract the precious coal from the Piesberg. The ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht stands as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the late 19th-century engineers. They faced a formidable challenge: keeping the mine dry enough to function. The solution they devised, these powerful pumping engines housed within this sturdy building, played a critical role in the mine’s operation. When coal production at the Stüveschacht ceased in 1898, the pumps fell silent. The engines were dismantled, and the roof of the ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht was removed, leaving the building exposed to the elements. Years of neglect took their toll, and the structure slowly deteriorated. Yet, even in its dilapidated state, the ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht retained its historical significance, earning it a place on the list of protected monuments. Despite this recognition, funding for restoration remained elusive, and the building continued to decay. It wasn’t until 2015 that a dedicated group of individuals formed the Förderverein Stüveschacht e.V., determined to save this piece of Osnabrück’s industrial heritage. Their efforts have breathed new life into the ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht. The first phase of restoration focused on stabilizing the structure. The facade was meticulously restored to its original form. The second phase, completed in 2019, made the building accessible to visitors with the addition of stairs and railings. The Förderverein’s ongoing work ensures that the ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht will continue to stand as a proud reminder of Osnabrück’s mining past. Future plans include a barrel roof to protect the structure and exhibits showcasing artifacts and components of the original pumping machinery. The ehem. Pumpenhaus Stüveschacht will then truly speak to visitors, whispering the stories of the miners, the engineers, and the relentless battle against the water deep within the Piesberg.
