Seen it? The Wasserturm Osnabrück stands tall. It is a testament to Osnabrück’s past. Today, let’s uncover the tale of this striking structure.

The Wasserturm Osnabrück began its life with a crucial purpose. It was on August 4, 1886 when the building permit was issued. Completed in February 1886, the Wasserturm featured two large water tanks. A pump system filled these tanks using a water source about 25 meters deep. Seventeen chestnut trees surrounded the Wasserturm. These trees provided shade during the summer.

These tanks weren’t just any tanks. They were essential for the Osnabrücker-Actien-Bierbrauerei. The brewery was one of the earliest buildings in the area. The Wasserturm was built on the highest point of the brewery complex.

The Wasserturm’s architecture is notable. It is a brick building with a long rectangular layout and beveled corners. The upper level has timber framework. This framework once housed the water tanks.

Fast forward to 1993. The Wasserturm and its chestnut trees gained landmark status. This designation came from the Lower Saxony State Administration Office. The Wasserturm was the last piece of the former brewery. Its architecture was significant.

But time took its toll. The Wasserturm became dilapidated. It was almost a ruin. Then, in 1999, Bert Mutsaers and architect Bernd Kellermann stepped in. They restored the Wasserturm. They transformed it into a residential building.

The restoration was challenging. The 17 chestnut trees were protected. The construction team used a special crane. It was placed on concrete pillars. It lifted materials over the tree canopy. These materials went through two openings in the roof.

The large water tanks were removed. Because the Wasserturm sits on bedrock, workers excavated a basement. The interior was gutted. It made room for five living levels.

A small steel and glass addition was added to the north side. It was placed in a gap between the chestnut trees. This addition houses the kitchen, a guest WC, a cloakroom, and the entrance.

The upper level’s load-bearing capacity was redistributed. Steel framework was added to prevent collapse. The Wasserturm Osnabrück remains a proud piece of Osnabrück’s history. It is a blend of industrial heritage and modern living. The Wasserturm stands as a symbol of preservation. It is a reminder that the past can find new life.
