Contemplate Osnabrück’s medieval defenses. The Hellingsturm stands before us. It is a compelling relic of the past.

The Hellingsturm has stood for centuries. It has silently guarded Osnabrück. Since the Middle Ages, Osnabrück was protected by a strong city wall. Construction began around 1200. The wall was maintained and expanded over time. The wall’s purpose was to protect the city. By the late 19th century, the wall was removed. This made room for vehicles.

Written records often mention the Hellingsturm. It was a landmark and a defense structure. In 1482, Bishop Konrad IV gave fishing rights to the cathedral chapter. This was after legal disputes. The rights extended on the Hase River. They went from the bishop’s mill near St. Johann “to the stone image in the Hellinctorn.” The nature of this stone image is uncertain. Some say it was a Peter’s head.

The Hellingsturm marked the boundary. It divided the cathedral chapter’s property. It also divided the bishop’s lands. Today, half stands in the parish garden. The other half is on the Carolinum schoolyard. This was once part of the Old Town Bishop’s Court.

Excavations at the Carolinum in 2012 and 2013 revealed more. Archaeologists dug for eight months. They uncovered 15 meters of the fortification wall. The Hellingsturm’s foundations were studied closely. The mighty structure once had a diameter of 6.80 meters. It may have been around 20 meters high. Only the lower six meters remain today. We can still see remnants of windows and passages. These led to the bastion.

The Hellingsturm has a semi-circular shape. A Gothic arch is visible on its straight west wall. Originally, there was a large opening there. Now, it is bricked up. Towers like the Hellingsturm opened toward the city. They were easily supplied with provisions and weapons.

The Carolinum sports hall construction led to changes. Parts of the Hellingsmauer were preserved. They now rest under the schoolyard pavement. The Hellingsturm remains visible. It is a reminder of Osnabrück’s medieval fortifications. The cathedral community renovated the tower. This saved the old structure from decay.

An engraving by Wenzel Hollar around 1633 provides a glimpse. It shows the wall with two towers. The Hellingsturm is on the left. Another tower is on the right. It is located in today’s Bischofsgarten. Later plans called it “Tower in the Hellingsmauer”. The tower underwent significant changes in the 19th century. Neo-Gothic elements were added. These included battlements and pointed arch windows.

The Hellingsturm stands as a testament. It represents Osnabrück’s rich history. Its presence connects us to the past. The Hellingsturm represents resilience. It has been guarding Osnabrück for centuries. The Hellingsturm is a landmark. It has witnessed countless events. Its stones hold stories of defense. They also hold stories about property. It is a boundary marker. It is a testament to the city’s enduring spirit.
