Was it fate that led Hideyoshi Toyotomi to choose this location? Here before us stands the 藤庵 Stele. It marks a site steeped in Osaka’s story.

Let me share some of what makes the 藤庵 Stele significant. It stands as a silent witness to Osaka’s journey.

Osaka Castle began construction in 1583. It rose from the foundations of the destroyed Ishiyama Honganji Temple. This temple had been destroyed thirteen years prior. Hideyoshi Toyotomi envisioned Osaka Castle as the heart of a newly unified Japan. He intended it to be the grandest castle in the land. Gold became Toyotomi’s obsession. He wanted it everywhere inside the castle. The golden motif still glimmers on exterior awnings today.

However fate had other plans. Years after Hideyoshi’s death, Tokugawa’s forces attacked. The castle faced destruction. It was rebuilt in the 1620s. Lightning then struck the main tower in 1665. Fire consumed it.

The present tower wasn’t rebuilt until 1931. It miraculously survived air raids during World War II. A major restoration in 1997 has kept it a popular attraction.

Osaka Castle is near five train stations. Morinomiya or Osakajokoen Station offer unique garden paths to the castle. These paths are for those keen to explore.

Today the castle stands five stories high. It serves as a hugely popular historical museum. Artifacts on each floor detail Osaka’s history and that of the castle. From the top floor visitors can view the city. They can also view the surrounding park with cherry trees. Boat rides are offered along the moat.

The 藤庵 Stele reminds us of resilience. It echoes the tales of Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s vision. It speaks of destruction and rebirth. It stands amidst a castle that has seen it all. The 藤庵 Stele and Osaka Castle are testaments to time. They stand strong. They continue to tell their story.
