Across the Higashiyokobori River stands Kamiyamato-bashi Bridge. Its history stretches back to the Toyotomi era. The bridge’s name appears in historical documents like “Osaka no Jin Ezu”. The western end of the bridge was once a bustling financial center. Money exchangers lined the area during the mid-Edo period. A new bridge was constructed on the road through Kyobashi Town. This is why it’s called Imabashi. It was a large bridge for its time. It measured 75.8 meters long and 5.5 meters wide. A shared boat service even operated from its base. Sadly Kamiyamato-bashi Bridge suffered repeated fire damage. It was rebuilt many times. During the Meiji period it was replaced with a wooden girder and iron piles. A splendid bridge followed. It used type steel girders. Cast iron adorned its lights and handrails. Sadly this cast iron was likely donated during the war. The current Kamiyamato-bashi Bridge stands as a testament to resilience. It was rebuilt in 1994. The design of the lighting and railings however hearkens back to its past. Look closely at the details. You’ll notice the careful recreation of historical elements. The designers replicated the bridge’s elegant appearance from a bygone era. Kamiyamato-bashi Bridge stands not just as a vital link. It is a living symbol of Osaka’s enduring spirit. It connects the past to the present. The bridge speaks of commerce and resilience. It is a vital part of Osaka’s rich and captivating story. As you stand here today you can feel the weight of history. Each stone each girder carries the echoes of centuries. Kamiyamato-bashi Bridge is more than just a bridge. It is a journey through time a testament to the city’s soul.
