A towering paper tiger greets you at Chogosonshi-ji. This isn’t just any temple. Chogosonshi-ji is steeped in history legend and vibrant culture. Located high on Mount Shigi this temple boasts a breathtaking view of the Yamato Plain.
Prince Shotoku himself is credited with its founding. Legend says that 1400 years ago he prayed to Bishamonten for victory in battle. This prayer was answered dramatically. Bishamonten appeared at the hour of the tiger on the day of the tiger in the year of the tiger. The prince won the battle and built Chogosonshi-ji in gratitude. The tigers you see around the temple are a testament to this miraculous event.
The walk to the main hall is an adventure in itself. You can even pass through a tiger-shaped tunnel. It’s said this brings good luck. Inside the tunnel you’ll find a place to hang ema wish tablets. Monks often perform purification rituals in the open square nearby. Their chants and the rhythmic movements of their staffs create a captivating atmosphere.
Several times a day special rituals take place within the main hall. These rituals invite Bishamonten into your home to protect you. The statuary inside is stunning but photography is sadly prohibited. From the balcony you can enjoy panoramic views.
