Was it destiny or chance that led to the creation of this grand institution? We are standing before the Institución Educativa Independencia Americana. It is more than just a school. It is a symbol of Arequipa’s commitment to education and progress.

Founded in 1827, the Institución Educativa Independencia Americana has a rich history. Simón Bolívar himself decreed its creation on August 6, 1825. The school’s opening on July 15, 1827 marked a new chapter for education in Arequipa. Political issues caused some delays. But the project was revitalized by Antonio Gutiérrez de la Fuente. He was the prefect of Arequipa.

The school first occupied the old Convento de los Agustinos. This convent was repurposed to house both the school and a new university. The establishment of the Institución Educativa Independencia Americana was no easy feat. Gutiérrez de la Fuente faced resistance when he proposed suppressing the convent. Despite the opposition, he pushed forward. He understood the importance of education for the region.

José María Corbacho y Abril became the first rector. He was a prominent figure in Peru’s independence. The initial faculty consisted of accomplished individuals. They were from the Academia Lauretana. This academy was Arequipa’s earlier attempt at scientific education. The Institución Educativa Independencia Americana extended that academic tradition. It also anticipated the founding of the Universidad Nacional San Agustín.

Over the years, many notable figures have served as rectors. Juan Gualberto Valdivia and Francisco de Paula González Vigil are among them. The school temporarily closed. But it reopened in 1840 under President Agustín Gamarra. The Institución Educativa Independencia Americana has been led by many influential figures. Mateo Paz Soldán and Toribio Pacheco also served as rectors.

Federico M. Ugarte was a distinguished director. He also wrote the lyrics to the school’s anthem. Benigno Ballón Farfán composed the music. The anthem celebrates the spirit of independence. It embodies the school’s values.

Today, the Institución Educativa Independencia Americana stands as a testament to Arequipa’s enduring legacy. It is recognized as a leading educational institution. The school has about 1273 students and 89 teachers. It offers a continuous schedule in the morning and afternoon. The Institución Educativa Independencia Americana remains committed to shaping future generations. It is still a source of pride for the city.
