Hidden within the bustling city of Osaka, Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine whispers tales of resilience and rebirth. Here, amidst the modern cityscape, stands a testament to the enduring spirit of Shinto. Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine, established in 1624, has witnessed the ebb and flow of Osaka’s history. It was founded at the behest of Kusaka Genyun during the development of Kujo Island. Originally, Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine served as the local deity shrine for the Kujo village. The shrine’s name, intriguingly, has two possible origins. One suggests it arose from the removal of thorns (ibara) to build the shrine. Another theory links it to Ibaraki Province, proposing a connection to Ibaraki’s Sumiyoshi Shrine. Tragically, in March 1945, the fires of war consumed Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, the shrine was meticulously reconstructed in 1965. Inside its serene grounds, you’ll find the Ichikishimahime Shrine and the Tamatsurugi Shrine, adding layers to its spiritual significance. The enshrined deities at Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine are Sokotsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto, Nakatsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto, and Uwatsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto. These deities represent the Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine as the Ubusuna of the area. The deity enshrined together at Ichikishimahime Shrine is also Sokotsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto. Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine also houses a monument with an inscription about forgetting water from a well known as Kakitsuhata. A short walk from Kujo Station brings you to this tranquil oasis. Ibarasumiyoshi Shrine offers a moment of reflection, a connection to the past, and a glimpse into the heart of Osaka’s spiritual landscape.
