Deep within Osaka’s Tennōji area sits Isshinji Temple. It’s a place where the past quite literally intertwines with the present. Isshinji Temple isn’t your typical serene, ancient temple. It’s a vibrant blend of history, spirituality, and modern architectural design. This temple houses something truly unique: Buddha statues crafted from human bone.

Isshinji Temple traces its roots back to 1185. Hōnen, the founder of the Jōdo Buddhist sect, chose this location for a small hut. Here, he could practice nissokan, a meditative practice focused on visualizing the western paradise. The area was known for its breathtaking sunsets. Even Emperor Shirakawa visited to participate in this practice. The temple flourished for a time, receiving land and buildings from Hideyoshi’s wife, Nene, in the 15th century. It later forged an unlikely connection with Tokugawa Ieyasu, who even used the temple grounds as a camp during the Siege of Osaka.

Sadly, World War II’s fire raids destroyed the original structures. The Isshinji Temple you see today showcases a striking modern design. The most captivating feature remains the okotsu butsu, the “bone Buddhas”. These statues, made from the cremated ashes of the faithful, represent a powerful connection to the past. The first okotsu butsu was created in 1887 using the ashes of 50,000 people. Today, a new statue is crafted every ten years.

The temple houses the remains of numerous individuals, but one grave stands out. It belongs to Honda Tadatomo, a retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Tadatomo’s tale is one of redemption. After losing a battle due to drunkenness, he fought bravely in the Battle of Tennoji, where he was mortally wounded. Upon his death, he vowed to aid those struggling with alcoholism. Visitors often leave rice paddles at his grave, seeking his help.

Beyond the main temple grounds, you’ll find the Sanzenbutsu-dō. Designed by Mr. Takaguchi, this modern building holds a thousand Buddha statues. By circling these statues clockwise, visitors can offer prayers to the Buddhas of the past, present, and future. Three circuits around the hall allow you to symbolically see three thousand Buddhas, or sanzen butsu. Isshinji Temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith, a fascinating blend of ancient traditions and modern design. It’s a space for quiet reflection and a profound connection to countless lives.
