Osaka Castle itself is an iconic symbol of the city. It played a pivotal role in Japan’s unification. The castle’s story began in 1583. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Napoleon of Japan, ordered its construction.

He wanted Osaka Castle to be the center of a unified Japan. It was the largest castle of its time. The castle took only three years to build. About 100,000 workers contributed to its construction.

Hideyoshi’s vision was to create a formidable structure. It would be a base to withstand enemy attacks. The castle included moats and high walls. It became a symbol of Hideyoshi’s power.

Sadly, Hideyoshi died in 1598 soon after its completion. His son Toyotomi Hideyori inherited the castle.

In 1615, Tokugawa Ieyasu attacked and destroyed the original Osaka Castle. This ended the Toyotomi clan’s rule. The Tokugawa Shogunate then took power for the next 250 years. Tokugawa Hidetada rebuilt the castle in the 1620s. But lightning struck the main tower in 1665 and it burned down.

The current castle tower is a 1931 reconstruction. It miraculously survived the city-wide air raids of World War II. Major repairs in 1997 restored its former glory. Inside, a modern museum tells the castle’s history. An elevator even provides easy access.

The Osaka Castle Obelisk is a reminder of this turbulent past. It stands within Osaka Castle Park. The park covers about two square kilometers. It offers green space and recreational facilities. This includes Osakajo Hall. The park is famous for cherry blossoms in spring.
