Imagine holding a piece of history in your hands. It is fragile yet strong. It speaks of emperors and artisans. We are standing before the Museum of Oriental Ceramics. It is an oasis of calm. It sits amidst Osaka’s bustling Nakanoshima Park.

The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, opened in November 1982. Osaka City built it. It honored the Sumitomo Group’s donation. Twenty-one companies gifted the world-renowned Ataka Collection. This collection forms the core of the museum.

But the Ataka Collection is not the museum’s only treasure. The Rhee Byung-chang Collection of Korean ceramics also enriches the museum. Works by Hamada Shoji are also present. The museum boasts one of the finest East Asian ceramics collections. Its quality and quantity are world-class.

Within these walls reside two National Treasures of Japan. Thirteen works are Important Cultural Properties. The museum’s collection has grown over time. Donations of Persian ceramics and Chinese snuff bottles have expanded it.

The Ataka Collection has a unique story. Ataka & Co., Ltd. once owned it. Founded in 1904, the company thrived. But financial troubles struck in 1975. ITOCHU Corporation absorbed it in 1977. The collection’s fate hung in the balance. It included 965 pieces of oriental ceramics.

Many feared its dispersal at auction. The Sumitomo Group stepped in. In 1980, twenty-one companies donated the Ataka Collection to Osaka City. Osaka City responded by building this museum. This ensured the collection’s preservation.

Inside the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, natural light illuminates the ceramics. Approximately three hundred works are on display. They showcase Chinese, Korean, and Japanese artistry. The museum also hosts temporary and special exhibitions. These exhibitions delve into specialized themes.

The Museum of Oriental Ceramics provides aesthetic experiences. It contributes to artistic sensitivity. It enhances self-cultivation. The galleries use natural light to display the ceramics. Display platforms rotate. Seismic isolation platforms protect the art.

The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, safeguards cultural assets. It enriches our understanding of East Asian art. It stands as a testament to the generosity of the Sumitomo Group. It offers a tranquil space for reflection. The Museum of Oriental Ceramics is more than just a museum. It’s a journey through time. It is a celebration of artistry.
