Gazing at the concrete and glass structure before us, who could imagine the Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan once housed a museum dedicated to sunsets? This striking building, designed by Tadao Ando, was originally the Suntory Museum. It was commissioned by Keizo Saji, Suntory’s second president, to celebrate their 90th anniversary. His vision was a space where people could connect with art and culture while enjoying a “beautiful sunset”. The Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan opened in 1994. The building itself is a work of art. Its inverted conical shape, covered in glass windows facing the sea, is a signature Ando design. The concrete structure further emphasizes his architectural style. Imagine standing inside, surrounded by the brilliance of the ocean, the setting sun painting the sky with vibrant hues. This connection with water is central to the museum’s design. A plaza even leads down from the museum towards the sea, inviting visitors to experience the waterfront. The Suntory Museum closed its doors in 2010. It was generously donated to Osaka City, becoming the Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan. After being managed by the ORIX Group until 2023, it is now under the care of the Japan-China Culture and Economy Corporation. They host a range of events, from duty-free shopping and dining to concerts, exhibitions, and art auctions. While the Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan’s schedule might be irregular now, the building’s unique design and its legacy as a place where art, culture, and the beauty of nature converged continue to resonate.
