Can you imagine an aquarium so large it once held the title of the world’s largest? Here at the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, that dream becomes a reality. The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan opened its doors in 1990, a key part of the revitalization of the Osaka Bay area. Built near the Tempozan Ferris Wheel, it quickly became a beloved attraction. In its first year alone, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan welcomed a staggering 5.6 million visitors, breaking national records.

The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan isn’t just about size. It’s about showcasing the incredible biodiversity of the Pacific Rim. The journey begins with a trip up the escalator, passing through the Aqua Gate, a mesmerizing tunnel tank teeming with tropical fish. Then, step into the “Japan Forest” exhibit, a recreation of a Japanese forest environment. Here you’ll encounter native species like Asian small-clawed otters and Japanese giant salamanders.

The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan’s main exhibits revolve around 16 habitats representing different regions of the Pacific Ocean. These exhibits contain a total of 27 tanks, holding an astounding 10,941 tons of water. From the icy landscapes of Antarctica, home to Adélie, gentoo, and king penguins, to the vibrant coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef, the aquarium offers a glimpse into diverse ecosystems. You’ll encounter playful California sea lions in the Monterey Bay exhibit and marvel at the vibrant colors of palette surgeonfish in the Great Barrier Reef section. The aquarium also features a unique jellyfish gallery, showcasing the ethereal beauty of moon jellyfish and northern sea nettles.

The crown jewel of the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is undoubtedly the Pacific Ocean tank. This colossal tank stretches 34 meters long, plunges 9 meters deep, and holds a staggering 5,400 cubic meters of water. Inside, a vibrant ecosystem thrives, with whale sharks, manta rays, and hammerhead sharks gliding through the water alongside schools of smaller fish. The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan was only the second aquarium globally to successfully keep whale sharks, and they remain a star attraction. However, they may have some competition. The aquarium also holds the distinction of being one of the few in the world to exhibit the ocean sunfish, its peculiar size and shape captivating visitors.

In more recent years, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan has continued to evolve. The “New Interactive Area,” opened in 2013, allows for closer encounters with the animals. Here you can observe ringed seals in the Arctic Zone, encounter southern rockhopper penguins in the Falkland Islands Zone, and even touch stingrays and small sharks in the Maldives Zone. The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is also dedicated to research and conservation, particularly focusing on sharks and rays. They’ve even achieved a world first: the successful conception of a giant devil ray in captivity. Although the pup sadly did not survive, it marks a significant milestone in the understanding of these magnificent creatures. As you leave the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, remember the important role it plays in both education and conservation. This isn’t just a place to see amazing creatures. It’s a place to learn about them, appreciate them, and understand our connection to the vast ocean that sustains us all.
