What shimmering expanse of water is this? It’s Lake Avalon, a place that once held the promise of golden citrus and Florida sunshine. Located west of Orlando, Lake Avalon was at the heart of a grand plan in the 1920s. This was the era of the Florida Land Boom, a time when dreams of wealth and sunshine drew people to the Sunshine State. The Orlando Orange Groves Company saw the potential of Lake Avalon. They believed it to be one of the finest places to grow oranges, not just in Florida, but perhaps in the entire United States. The company marketed the area as “Avalon Groves,” enticing investors with images of lush groves laden with fruit. They described the land as “rolling ridge land” dotted with lakes, perfect for growing citrus. And indeed, for a time, Lake Avalon and its surrounding area thrived on the citrus industry. Today, while the groves have largely given way to suburbia, the legacy of Lake Avalon’s citrus past lingers in the air, a faint whisper of orange blossoms carried on the breeze.
