High above sea level, perched on Florida’s peninsula, sits Minneola. Minneola is a city with a unique charm, born from the heart of citrus groves and nurtured by the spirit of the “many waters” that give it its name. This little city, you see, holds the crown for the highest elevation in peninsular Florida, a full 312 feet above sea level. Before the arrival of sprawling orange groves, Minneola was a land shaped by indigenous hands. The Timucua people, the first inhabitants of this land, called this place home. But history, as it often does, took a turn. The arrival of Europeans brought with it a wave of change and, unfortunately, disease. The Timucua population dwindled, making way for another Native American tribe, the Seminole, to make their mark on the land. Minneola, however, wasn’t always Minneola. It started its life as a twinkle in the eye of Captain William A. Smith, a former Georgian who decided to settle on the serene shores of Plum Lake right after the Civil War. More pioneers followed, drawn by the promise of fertile land. By 1880, the area around Lake Minneola, then known as Cow House Lake or Palatlakaha Lake, was alive with activity. Citrus groves, planted by early settlers like Henry Wilson, carpeted the landscape, their sweet aroma filling the air. The year 1884 saw Minneola take its first official steps, then a part of Sumter County. It wasn’t until 1926 that Minneola, embraced by the newly formed Lake County, officially became a city. The city’s growth, much like its citrus trees, was steady, bearing fruit in the form of new homes, businesses, and most importantly, community.
