Why is a Skyhawk here? You might ask yourself that when you see the impressive collection at the Vietnam War Memorial. This memorial, right here in Orlando, is more than just a tribute. It’s a time capsule. Founded in the 1980s by the Vietnam and All Veterans of Central Florida Inc., this site was once a veterans club, a museum, and a cultural center. In 1993, it was officially dedicated as the Cpl Larry E. Smedley National Vietnam War Museum, named for a Marine who showed incredible bravery. Imagine leading a squad against a much larger force! Corporal Smedley did, and he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. It’s not just about the big names, though. This memorial is a testament to all who served, with artifacts, photographs, and even a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Look around! You can see a “River Rat” patrol boat, a Huey Dustoff helicopter, and yes, even that Skyhawk attack aircraft, on loan from the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. Each piece tells a story, a piece of history frozen in time. The Vietnam War Memorial is a place of reflection, remembrance, and education. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices made and the resilience of the human spirit.
