Did that sign really say “MIT of the South”? Right here, before us, is Nova Southeastern University. It might surprise you, but this academic giant was once just a simple dream shared by a group of local businessmen known as “The Oatmeal Club”. Back in the early 1960s, they envisioned an institution that would push the boundaries of education and community service. That dream became a reality in 1964 when Nova University of Advanced Technology was founded. This wasn’t your typical university. It was a graduate research institution with a strong focus on the physical and social sciences. Originally located in downtown Fort Lauderdale, the university eventually found a new home in Davie, on the grounds of a former World War II airfield. This move marked the beginning of an era of expansion for Nova. Law, education, business, psychology, oceanography, the list of fields they explored seems endless. In 1994, a significant merger took place. Nova University joined forces with Southeastern University of Health Sciences, solidifying its presence in healthcare education. The newly christened Nova Southeastern University became a powerhouse. It boasts a remarkable achievement: It is one of only 50 universities to receive both Carnegie’s “high research activity” classification and their prestigious Community Engagement Classification. From those early aspirations shared over breakfast, Nova Southeastern University has far exceeded even the wildest dreams of “The Oatmeal Club”.
