Step into the Heimatmuseum Stein. This unassuming building holds a treasure trove of Stein’s history. It’s nestled within the oldest building in Stein. Built in 1635 and expanded in 1690 it was originally an inn. Known as Zum goldenen Adler it was later renamed Gasthaus zur Post around 1900. This is because the owner also ran the local post office. He delivered the mail several times daily from Stein to the train station.

The Heimatmuseum Stein however is much more than just an old inn. It’s a living testament to Stein’s rich past. Acquired by the city in 1988 it underwent extensive restoration. Today it houses the city library and serves as a meeting place for the Stein Home and Culture Association. The museum itself opened on May 31 2008. It was unveiled during the town’s annual festival.

Spread across 120 square meters the Heimatmuseum Stein showcases donations and loans. These artifacts tell the story of Stein’s crafts industry family life and community spirit. The exhibits vividly depict the past. They aim to present Stein’s history in an engaging way for both adults and children.

The museum relies on the support of Stein’s citizens. Donations of old artifacts are welcome. Even temporary loans are appreciated. They help preserve the community’s heritage. While the museum’s permanent exhibition is always open on the third Sunday of each month from 2 pm to 5 pm they also host special exhibitions.

These often focus on specific themes. Past exhibitions have included ones on leather crafts and local clubs. The museum is currently preparing for a new special exhibition planned for Spring 2025. Though it is housed in a historic building the Heimatmuseum Stein’s limited accessibility for wheelchair users is a regrettable fact. But its charm and unique history make it a worthwhile visit. This museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the heart of Stein. Come explore its remarkable story.
