“A canal that connects the North Sea to the Black Sea?” you might ask. You are standing before a relic of a bygone era, the Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal. This waterway, now abandoned, was once a marvel of engineering. It embodied the vision of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who dreamt of uniting the Danube and Rhine river systems. Constructed between 1836 and 1846, the Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal stretched for over 100 kilometers. It provided a continuous passage from the Danube River at Kelheim to the Main River at Bamberg. Imagine the sight of barges laden with goods, traversing this ribbon of water, pulled by horses along the towpaths. The canal was a bustling artery of commerce, carrying grain, salt, and timber across the heart of Bavaria. However, the Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal had its limitations.
