Fancying a place that shaped Tonga’s future leaders? That’s Tonga High School. Established in 1947 by Prince Tungi, later King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV, Tonga High School aimed to provide education on par with New Zealand and Australia.
Tonga High School sits right here in Nuku’alofa. The school’s story is one of vision and growth. Prince Tungi, as Minister of Education, wanted Tongan students to have the best opportunities.
These buildings around you were a gift. The Chinese government helped construct them. They officially opened on July 2, 2005. Imagine a school with 34 classrooms and 18 labs. It can hold over a thousand students. A second construction phase was planned but it included a gymnasium, swimming pool, and sports stadium.
Getting into Tonga High School is tough. Only the best students from primary schools get in. They have to score high on national exams to enter Form 1.
Back in 2005, 1,154 students attended Tonga High School. They were sorted into four houses: Nua, Kava, Sangone, and Tele’a. Each house brings its own color and spirit to school events.
Leading Tonga High School is Mrs Sipola Havili Halafihi. She is the Principal. Assisting her are Deputy Principals Mrs Ariana Veituna, Mrs ‘Oliveti Tovo, Mr Gerald Tupou, and Mrs ‘Ofeina ‘Aipolo Cocker. The Senior Tutor is Mr ‘Alalati Pomana and the Senior Mistress is Mrs Fane ‘U’anga. Rev Penisimani ‘Akauola Tonga serves as the School Chaplain. The school even has its own brass band. Mr Taniela Lolohea Manu is the Band Master.
Tonga High School celebrated its diamond jubilee in 2023. That is 75 years of education and service.
Many notable people walked these halls. Teachers like Sosefo Fe’aomoeata Vakata, Afu’alo Matoto, and Siale’ataongo Tu’ivakano shaped young minds here. Students such as Dr Sanipisi Langi Huakavameiliku and Pita Taufatofua started their journeys here.
The school has evolved over the years. It once followed the New Zealand educational model. Now, it uses a Tongan model. The school year runs from February to December. Classes are taught in both English and Tongan. Tonga High School plays a crucial role in shaping Tonga’s future.
