“A giant head?” the girl whispered, tugging at her father’s sleeve. He chuckled. “That’s the Tête Carrée, sweetheart. It’s a library.” Right here in Nice, the Tête Carrée stands as one of the most unique architectural feats of the modern era. This isn’t just any library. It’s a thirty-meter-tall, fourteen-meter-wide sculpture, a giant head designed by Sacha Sosno. Sosno, a peer of renowned artists like Matisse and Klein, dreamed of this creation. He saw it as a metaphor, “Thinking Inside the Box.” In 1997, his dream came true. His design was chosen for the administrative offices of the Louis Nucéra Library. The Tête Carrée, inaugurated in 2002, became the world’s first inhabited monumental sculpture. The building itself is an incredible feat of engineering. Shipwrights constructed the head and neck using aluminum. The neck houses three floors, while the head contains four more, all filled with the library’s administrative offices. Sosno’s artistic vision extended beyond the simple form of a head. He employed his signature style, “l’art d’oblitérer” – the art of obliteration. This involved adding voids or solids to his work to distort the full picture. Sosno believed this technique engaged the viewer’s imagination, forcing them to complete the artwork in their minds. At night, the Tête Carrée transforms. A lighting scheme designed by Yann Kersalé illuminates the structure from within, revealing the floors of the library housed within. The Tête Carrée has become a true landmark of Nice. It’s a must-see for art and architecture enthusiasts. It sparks admiration and intrigue in all who pass by, leaving a lasting impression on those who experience this unusual and extraordinary structure.
