Did you know Brother Marc a Franciscan from Nice became Fray Marcos de Niza? He supposedly named the site of future San Francisco California after his order’s founder. We stand before the Musée Franciscain a testament to Franciscan life in Nice since the 13th century. This museum housed within the monastery complex on Cimiez hill is more than just a collection of artifacts. It’s a living history book. The museum tells the story of the Franciscan presence in Nice. Remember that the Franciscan monks of Cimiez also oversaw the Sainte-Marie-des-Anges parish. Today four friars from Assisi Italy serve this parish. The Musée Franciscain is nestled within a larger complex. This includes the impressive 15th-century Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption church. Admire three major paintings by the Niçois primitive Louis Bréa. These masterpieces include a Pietà a Crucifixion and a Deposition. They represent 40 years of the artist’s career.
