“Isn’t it remarkable how buildings can transform?”. The Église Protestante Unie de Nice Saint-Esprit stands before us. It has a rich history. It began as a place for American Episcopalians. Now, it serves the United Protestant Church of France.

Let’s delve into the story of this unique building. In the late 19th century, Nice’s American community needed a church. They started raising money in 1886. By 1887, construction began on the Church of the Holy Spirit. W.G. Habershon, a British architect, designed it. W. Tett oversaw the work locally.

Imagine the dedication ceremony on December 13, 1888. The church became the heart of social life for Americans wintering in Nice. A parsonage was added soon after.

The Église Protestante Unie de Nice Saint-Esprit boasts a distinct architectural style. It is primarily neo-Gothic. This contrasts with the other buildings nearby. Only the Anglican church on Rue de la Buffa shares this style.

Inside, light filters through beautiful stained-glass windows. Community members donated these during construction. Look up to see the impressive roof timbers. Rosette-shaped decorations adorn them. Originally, electro-pneumatic organs stood in a side chapel. These were on the left side of the choir.

After the American fleet left Villefranche in 1966, the Episcopal Church vacated the building. In 1974, the Reformed Church acquired the church and parsonage. It became known as the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Later, a meeting center was added on Rue Maccarani.

A new organ was commissioned in 1989. Mr. Silbermann built it. It was installed in the choir. The installation partially covered one of the stained-glass windows.

Notice the regular polygonal stonework. It is somewhat uncommon. It features throughout the building. Archives mention the stone came from near Villefranche-sur-Mer. The window frames are made of yellow stone from Arles.

The Église Protestante Unie de Nice Saint-Esprit and its grounds are now protected. They were listed as historical monuments in 2019 or 2020. This includes the church. It also includes the facades and roofs of the parsonage. The listing extends to the enclosure elements.

Mrs. Niven, a Vanderbilt heiress, generously donated to the Église Protestante Unie de Nice Saint-Esprit. She provided most of the church’s furnishings. This includes the marble pulpit and copper lectern. She also funded the construction of the adjoining parsonage.

Consider the details of the exterior. The tower is central to the design. It is complete with a stone spire. Gargoyles and sculpted heads decorate the bell tower. These figures add character.

The Église Protestante Unie de Nice Saint-Esprit represents a blend of histories. It is a testament to the changing communities of Nice. From its American beginnings to its current role, it has been a place of worship and community. It is a place of architectural and artistic significance.
