Duke Emmanuel-Philibert, determined to protect his lands, commissioned the construction of this mighty fortress in 1554. The Italian engineer Gian Maria Olgiatti designed the citadel, incorporating innovative defensive strategies of the time. The Citadelle Saint-Elme boasts a unique trapezoidal design, its corners fortified by robust bastions facing the sea. A wide moat encircles the entire structure, crossed by a single bridge leading to the entrance gate. The Citadelle Saint-Elme wasn’t a standalone defense. It was part of a larger network of fortifications, including the forts of Saint-Alban and Saint Hospice, all designed to safeguard the vital port of Villefranche. Fast forward to 1860. The Citadelle Saint-Elme served as a military base for the 24th Battalion of Alpine Chasseurs after Savoy became part of France. The city council acquired the Citadelle in 1965. A significant restoration took place in 1979, breathing new life into the historic structure. The Citadelle Saint-Elme then found a new purpose, housing the City Hall and becoming a vibrant cultural center. It now boasts museums, an auditorium, and even a Théâtre de Verdure. Today, the Citadelle Saint-Elme stands proudly. It is a testament to resilience, ingenuity, and the enduring spirit of Villefranche-sur-Mer.
